Coworking Space KL: 5 COVID-19 Work from Home Survival Tips

With the Movement Control Order (MCO) being placed in our country, we are facing the fate of a mandatory work-from-home (WFH) order from our companies including Colony Coworking Space KL.

Many people fantasize working from home where you get to skip the unnecessary traffic, snoozing your alarm a little longer and the liberty of not dressing up for work. Working from home has many benefits but we also know how easy it is to get distracted.

Hence, we have compiled and organized a list of WFH survival tips to help battle your tasks evenly and keep you focused throughout the day. Let’s dive right in then, shall we?

Coworking Space KL: Tip 1, Get dressed

There’s nothing in this world that will make you feel more at ease than lounging in our pyjamas the whole day can be. But the ugly side of this is that it can affect you psychologically by diminishing your productivity during work hours as your body feels like it’s in lounge mode. That’s why getting dressed up will navigate you in the right mindset to work and get you mentally and physically prepared for the day.

You don’t need to dress as formally as you might for work, but the simple act of changing clothes serves as a signal to your body that it’s time to wake up and get things done.

Coworking Space KL: Tip 2, Keep clearly defined work hours

Most people who work from home struggle to be on par with their regular work schedule which can result in working a few hours in a day or pulling an all-nighter the next to complete unfinished business. What you can do is plan ahead by writing all tasks that are needed to be completed for the day and setting a time limit for each one of them. This way, you get to work faster in completing your work and tick off all of your tasks by the end of the day.

Set the regular work hours and stick to the same schedule to make sure you are on track!

Coworking Space KL: Tip 3, Designate a workspace at home

We can’t scream how important this is, but yes, this is important. A dedicated space is vital to keeping your productivity in check.

Coworking Space KL: Working from home

It could be your empty or spare bedroom that you’ve converted into a home office or even a desk in the corner or maybe even your dining room table. We recommend that you stay away from your bedroom as your room should be a place to relax, not a work den. If your bedroom is the only option, make sure that your work desk doesn’t face your bed. This shift will change your productivity drastically instead of wanting to sleep every 30 minutes.

Allocating a fixed workstation will help you to commit to working in this space every day and keep you productive.

Coworking Space KL: Tip 4, Take clear breaks

Working from home sometimes may wound us up over-committing to a particular assignment or working for long periods of time. We’re so used to having lunch hours in the office but at home, every activity seems to be in the same time zone. That’s why it’s important for us to take short and light breaks in between work to not only fight out work anxiety but also increase our productivity and boost creativity.

Take a lunch break by cooking a healthy meal from your own kitchen, stretch your body and walk around the house. If you need a little socializing, hop on a call with a friend or your favourite co-worker and check in on what they’re up to. These things will help ease your mind off work for a while and get you inspired when you hop back into it.

Coworking Space KL: Tip 5, Stay off social media

This a tough one, especially when your nosy coworker or boss is no longer sneaking up on you looking at your phone anymore. Staying off social media can be tricky and somehow painful in the time of viral TikTok videos and inspiring IG Live Series but it can take a toll on your productivity when you don’t set proper boundaries with your screen time.

Instead of completely having zero contact with your phone, it’s best that you use it at a minimum period of time. Limit the time spent on social media or websites unrelated to your work during work hours. If you must, you can check your updates during your break or lunch hour. In return, you would have something to look forward to and even more motivated in getting your job done quickly and efficiently.

We know working from home might be a challenge and you’re waiting to crawl back to your office. However, we know better days are coming. Colony Coworking Space KL looks forward to opening our doors to you once the MCO is lifted so till then, please stay safe at home!
